Where Are You Hank When We Need You Most?

I just don't dig the Sunday business, man.

When I was a kid, banks were not open on Saturdays or Sundays. You had to rush about to get your paycheck cashed on Friday. That was back in the day when you got a weekly paycheck.

I think a weekly paycheck is more satisfying. You strap on the yoke for a week and when you lay it down on Friday you get paid.

I give you my life for 40 hours - you give me a check. Easy.

Now you got the every other week thing going on and it ain't for the benefit of the employee. Its easier for the business and allows them to hold on to their money longer.

Who do you think that benefits - you or Mr. Biziness Man?

A lot of stores were not open on Sundays as well. So you had to plan ahead. Get things done in advance, figure out what you need and go out and get it in an orderly fashion instead of running around like a moron out of breath and last minute.

And nobody was working on Thanksgiving. Except for the people who protect us and save us. Essential people. As opposed to retail employees, otherwise known as non-essential workers (like myself).

That set up was not the end all and the be all, but it did allow for more down time. Maybe even a little family time. In fact it kind of forced you to relax.

The Saturday morning thing for banks makes sense. It was a pain in the ass trying to get your check cashed on Friday.

But that's it. Only Saturday morning. Not Saturday afternoon, and definitely not Sunday.

Its a combination of greed and laziness that got us here. And there will be no turning back.

Because we are getting greedier and lazier.

People shop on Sundays like it is their God given right.

It is not.

It is your Devil given right. (That was cheesy but I can never resist getting The Devil into the conversation any time the opportunity arises.)

We have lost a lot in this country. What we are losing is the personal stuff, the real stuff, the stuff that matters.

Ironically, the stuff that makes life worth living.

You have to fight for family time, you have to fight for a small chance to catch your breath every once in a great while.

I don't think Hank would have done it this way.
